Bob Maginnis

It is without any doubt that we today sit on the edge of a precipice of a major global change. As the internal structure of the US continues to become more and more divided in conjunction with rising world tensions, one cannot help but feel that a breaking point is near. World powers continue to flex muscles, atrocities continue to be allowed, and the chasm between peoples grows wider each day. Today’s guest on The Malliard Report has an expert finger on the pulse of these happenings and is open to share his professional perspective. This week Jim welcomes Lieutenant Colonel Robert L. Maginnis to the show to discuss his recent book, political turmoil, the world powers standoff, and much more.
“Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Bob Maginnis graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, the Naval Postgraduate School, the Command & General Staff College, the Defense Language School and the Army War College’s strategy course. He is an Airborne-Ranger infantry officer with service in four infantry divisions on three continents. Once retired from the Army he joined the FRC where he rose to be the vice president for policy before returning to the Pentagon 16 years ago. He is currently the vice president for his contracting firm with duties at the Pentagon supervising a team of national security experts and is a security cooperation expert for the Headquarters, Department of the Army as well as instructing a course at the Army War College.”
While officially “ending” in 1991 with the collapse of the USSR (but with the most notable final blow coming in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall) the Cold War was a tense geopolitical standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Cold War bore witness to an arms race of monumental proportions, numerous “conflicts” and skirmishes, and a manufactured fear that weighed heavy on the innocent bystanders. Nearly 30 years later, the Soviet Union is still no more, however, an arms race amid rising tensions seems to be unfurling before our very eyes between three of the world powers; Russia, China, and the United States. With rapid expansion and advancement of weapons, military staging and shows of force, and aggressive land acquisitions, it would appear that history is once again repeating itself and the world is turning into a proverbial tinder box.
One of the unfortunate byproducts of the previous cold war, and potentially this one, is the threat of nuclear weapon usage. While the idea of nuclear weapons being used by any side (especially considering the knowledge of the aftermath that we have today) is unnerving in and of itself, a lesser known (but equally disconcerting) problem has risen from this global “mine is bigger than yours” contest and that is the current state of our nuclear weapons. The last nuclear test in the United States occurred in September 1992. For 26 years these weapons have been dormant, which brings into question their stability and effectiveness.
