“Sometimes to do the right thing, you have to break a law. And the key there is in terms of civil disobedience. You have to make sure that what you’re risking, what you’re bringing onto yourself, does not serve as a detriment to anyone else. It doesn’t hurt anybody else.”
Most of us from a very young age are taught that we are supposed to stand up for what is right. When we see harm (both physical and non-physical) or malice being done it is in our very nature to push back against it. But what happens when doing what is right is viewed as being wrong? Such is the case for several high-profile names in today’s news and culture; Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning, and today’s guest on The Malliard Report, John Kiriakou.
“John Kiriakou is a former CIA analyst and case officer, former senior investigator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and former counterterrorism consultant. While employed by the CIA, he was involved in critical counterterrorism missions following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, but refused to be trained in so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques.” and Kiriakou never authorized or engaged in these techniques After leaving the CIA, Kiriakou appeared on ABC News in an interview with Brian Ross, during which he became the first former CIA officer to confirm that the agency waterboarded detainees and label waterboarding as torture. Kiriakou’s interview revealed that this practice was not just the result of a few rogue agents, but was official U.S. policy approved at the highest levels of the government. The government started investigating Kiriakou immediately after his media appearance. Five years later, the government finally succeeded in piecing together enough information to criminally prosecute him. He became the sixth whistleblower indicted by the Obama administration under the Espionage Act – a law designed to punish spies, not whistleblowers.”
John is an absolute incredible guest with just as fantastic story to tell in these troubling times. However, he provides hope that there may still be good within the dredges of “the swamp” “deep state” whatever you want to call it. His constant fervor to bring dark practices into the light has led him to write several books, maintain a podcast, and continue on an interview circuit that would exhaust just about any other person. You are able to keep up with his latest book, media event, or stance on current happenings through his website johnkiriakou.com.
