The American prison system is an entity that is certainly not without controversy. The United States utilizes incarceration as the primary form of punishment and leads in the world with the highest per capita for incarcerations. The most recent figures (As of 2018) show that there are 698 people locked up for every 100,000. Many experts have advocated that a less punitive and more recovery approach needs to be taken when dealing with many offenders; especially considering a large number of the prison population suffers from addiction or other mental disorders. This week on The Malliard Report, Jim brings a guest that is truly on the front lines within this field. This week Jim welcomes Dr. Karen Gedney to discuss prison reform, and her experiences within the American prison system.

“Doctor Karen Gedney is an internal medicine specialist who was placed in a male medium security prison in 1987 to complete a four-year work exchange for a scholarship she received for medical school. Against all odds she stayed three decades and turned it into her calling. Today Karen continues to speak to increase awareness and inspire individuals and groups to become involved in prison reform. Karen lives near Carson City, Nevada and is currently speaking out against Nevada’s death penalty.”
